Archos 604 Wifi Review

The Archos 604 is one of the products that are categorized within the 04 Generation of the Archos product line. Although its  WiFi  features and high quality video and sound playback were a massive advantage back when they were released around 4 years ago, they now no longer stand out amongst Smartphone/Tablet gadgets.

So why write an article on a Portable Media Player which is now 4 years old?

It’s very simple – price. The Archos 604 is now incredibly cheap to buy, especially when you compare it with many Apple and Android based models (which is essentially the vast majority of the market). This is an incredibly appealing situation for people who want the use and availability of being able to watch videos and listen to music, but who don’t want to pay for the ‘designer’ logos that some of the bigger brands have and who command high prices for.

Instead of forking out possibly 700-800 dollars on an iPad to watch videos on the way to work, you could pay half that and have a device with similar but admittedly slightly inferior features. It’s a situation where you can get 85% of the quality at 35% of the price, and in the current economic climate it’s an obvious choice to many people. Although not as prestigious a company as Apple, Archos designs their products with the 21st century clearly at the forefront of their minds because their models have almost all been a slick mixture of chrome steel, with partitions of shiny aluminum and a subtle silver coating on the plastic cover edges. Even if you are only paying a fraction of the cost, don’t think you’re buying an ancient brick – you’re still buying a great and really impressive product!

The Archos 604 has  WiFi  capabilities meaning that as long as it’s within a detectable  WiFi  network it can connect and then access the internet (assuming you have authorization to do so). This is especially useful for people with home wireless networks because it means that they can walk around the house and stream videos/music while laying in bed, or even out in the garden.

The really attractive thing about the Archos 604 is the high quality video that nears on high definition but doesn’t quite get there. However it’s still a great visual experience, the screen is free of smudges and doesn’t scratch easily. I think there may be some vulnerabilities to scratching the metallic casing on the back (I say I think because I don’t want to ruin my device!) so it may be worth investigating more of buying a case to make sure you don’t damage your machine.
